Psychedelic Voyager Art: A Journey into the Decaying Tree Trunk

Psychedelic Voyager Art: A Journey into the Decaying Tree Trunk

On the 21st of January, 2024, I found an intriguing discovery in the car park of Preston Park, Brighton. I went on a journey into the decaying tree trunk, topped and weathered by time, stood as a testament to the beauty found in nature’s process of decay. The vibrant colors and unique textures of its bark held a mesmerizing allure. Its bark, adorned with an array of colors and patterns, offering a perfect subject for Psychedelic Voyager Art.

Geometry in Nature

The decaying tree trunk again presented an opportunity to explore geometry in nature. With the patterns formed by the cracking and peeling bark, I knew I could revealed a world of delicate symmetry and fractal-like totems, each telling a story of life & decay. This natural world geometry served as a foundation for creating art that transcends the ordinary, inviting viewers to see the world through a different lens.

The Vision for Psychedelic Voyager Art

Psychedelic Voyager Art is a way for me to capture and then create trippy but natural wonders, transforming them into visual journey is always exciting, to challenge perception and ignite imagination with new fractal totems.

27th June 2024 – Knepp Rewilding Project – Walled Garden Tour

27th June 2024 – Knepp Rewilding Project – Walled Garden Tour.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Knepp’s Rewilding ProjectWalled Garden Tour.  As a lover of plant photography and creating art out of nature this place was heaven for me.  I got so carried away by the awe and capturing the beauty of Knepp with my camera, when I realised that everyone else on the tour had gone!

Croquet & swimming pool

Incredible & beautiful, the Walled Garden at Knepp was originally a sculptured and manicured garden with croquet lawn.  In 2022 Charly & Isabella decided that their Walled back garden should be inkeeping with the rest of the Knepp rewilding project.

Resculptured back garden.

They resculptured and landscaped the space with crushed hardcore materials already onsite, then planted drought resistant plants all over the site, they kept the pool and still use it as there back garden. 2 years later the results are astonishing and are only set to get more exciting.

5th July 2024 – Merlin’s Hidden Islands – Tintagel Beach – Cornwall

Here is the Merlin art work I have created using photographs I took at Tintagel Beach in Cornwall, then mirroring the images in Creative Cloud.  I’ve called the Psychedelic Voyager Art, Merlin’s Hidden Islands, as I feel once I mirrored this photo, Merlin’s Hidden Isles really appeared.

I am presently on a bit of a working photographic art tour of Cornwall. I have a check list of place to visit including The Eden ProjectThe Lost Gardens of HeliganThe Lizard & Holywell Cave.  I am going to try my best to be blogging here along the way. Also coming soon will be my Knepp photos of their walled garden.

Psychedelic Voyager Art Collection – Grass is Greener 5th May 2020

The Grass is Greener series are the first mirror photography art that really deeply excited me, I have been experimenting with mirroring my photos for a good few years before I created this Grass is Greener art,  it was at this point I realised that the complexity in nature can create some spectacular geometric worlds.

Grass is Greener #1 & #2 from my Psychedelic Voyager Art Collection. This photographic art, is a photo taken in a dear friend’s front garden, of his wild grasses, Herb Robert and Plantains. The art is Totem pole art, when the plants photos are mirrored mysticism happens, Totem poles of creature’s strange faces appear. Psyconauts take a voyage in the garden.

Thistle Crocodiles –  Sots Hole Nature Reserve 6th November 2023

Psychedelic Voyager Art Collection – Thistle Crocodiles – Sots Hole Nature Reserve 2023 Prickly Thistles and Tree Beard!

Creeping thistles to sit on and Tree Beard!

We have all done it, out in the sunshine, wanting to sit in the wild grasses and we either put our hands or arses on these spikey devils. OUCH!  But have you ever really explored them, their prickly pain givers are so uniform. Precisely lined up in a mathematical equation.  World class defenders of there own realm.

I have seen these plants around all over the place, and never really took any notice, but in the Psychedelic Voyager realms of art, this little prickle makes a bold geometric statement, I get very excited now when I spot a good one tucked away in the Sots Hole Nature Reserve, amongst the leaf decay.  Along side this Thistle Crocodile is Tree beard with a Creeping Buttercup beard and decaying crown.  His army of thistles close by.

Fern Synergy – Life & Decay 2023 – Sots Hole Nature Reserve.

Ferns! I just love Ferns, beautiful exotic, textured spore spilling plants.  In the summer I planted a few different varieties in my Garden Nook under the tree.  This is one of them, it’s a Ladder Fern. Blechnum spicant, & Dryopteris erythrosora. Wood fern. Japanese Shield fern.  The unravelling leaves on both plants are just so pretty and delicate to look at and photograph.

Autumn is an epic time to photograph the wild common ferns, the colour displays they give are spectacular.  I wasn’t disappointed when visiting Sots Hole Nature Reserve in Lyndon West Bromwich, and found this hedgerow erupting in colour.  These beautiful plants and there wonderous symmetry have lead me to creating Fern Synergy – Life & Decay.  This piece of art has become my new favourite.  The warmth of orange, which also symbolises a beautiful process of decay.   The fading lush green tendrils covered carrying dark orange / red spores, ready to drop and scatter to give new life.  Nature has all the resources it needs for the cycle of life.

Psychedelic Voyager Art Collection – Peacock Tails – Croatian Water Angel 2019

Psychedelic Voyager Art Collection – Peacock Tails – Croatian Water Angel 2019

I always find sea & coastal plants are far more interesting, almost exotic compared to the everyday flora I see inland in the UK.  When I was in Croatia along the Okrug Gornji coastline I was delighted to find these common brown algae ‘Peacock Tail’ in the shallow water.  These common brown Algae were dancing their angle wings in time with the seas currents.  They were quite hard to capture on camera because of the constant movements of the water, but this  motion also added a soft fluid distorted quality to the images, enhancing the watery magic.

When I put the Peacock Tail under water images through photoshop and mirrored the images, the dark line of the seas current became the outline of an angel, hence the name Croatian Water Angel.

Peacock Tales Common Brown Algae

The Water Angel image inspires me to make more under water flora creations in the future, both at home and abroad.

Psychedelic Voyager Art Collection – The Ovule Cycle of Life – Cow Parsnip – River Adur August 2021

I have had an interest in the structure of Cow Parsnip for a long time.  I really enjoy the late summer flowers, and the early autumn seed pods that weigh the parsnip flower heads down heavily to the ground, ready to reproduce, to be taken by the soil and leaf decay.

It looks like there are some myths & legends around Cow Parsnip or Hogweed

I marvel at the Cow Parsnips delicate cloud of white flowers, how they stand so proudly, always to be seen along foot paths and cycle lanes

The inspiration for The Ovule Cycle of life is about the seed pods, their oval shapes.  The intense weight that the seed pods grow into, to produce such delicate flowers the following summer.

The art is inspired by Bjork’s song Ovule.  The centre of this image is the geometric womb.  The seed pods are bending towards their reproduction.  The white delicate flowers are washed outwards, ready to decompose, to feed the soil with nutrients for next years crop.
